🩺 Best Study Methods for Nursing Students (That Actually Work)
Nursing school comes with an overwhelming amount of information, and figuring out how to retain it all can feel impossible at first. The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all method—you have to find what works best for you.
Here are some of the most effective study techniques that helped me get through nursing school (and actually remember the material long-term).
🎨 1. Visual Learning: Make Your Notes Stand Out
If you’re a visual learner, plain notes probably won’t cut it.
Instead, try:
Color-coded study guides
Different fonts and headings
Diagrams and pictures
Making your notes visually engaging keeps your brain interested and helps you connect concepts faster. When you enjoy looking at your notes, you’re more likely to review them—and actually remember them.
✍️ 2. Learn by Doing (Hands-On Study)
If you learn best by doing, don’t just reread your notes—interact with them.
Try this:
Rewrite your notes by hand
Create your own study guides
Break topics down step-by-step
But the most powerful method?
👉 Teach what you’re learning
Explain concepts to classmates, lead study groups, or even talk through things during clinicals. Teaching forces you to fully understand the material, which makes it stick far better than passive studying.
😂 3. Use Memory Tricks (Even If They’re Silly)
Pharmacology especially can feel impossible to memorize—unless you make it fun.
Don’t be afraid to get creative or even ridiculous with memory tricks. The sillier it is, the more likely you are to remember it.
A few examples I STILL think of when giving these meds:
Cardizem → think of Cardi B and “rhythm” (used for arrhythmias)
Lantus → Alanis Morissette and “Isn't it Ironic… I have no peak”
It might sound goofy, but these little connections stick in your brain way better than straight memorization.
🗂️ 4. Flashcards (A Nursing School Lifesaver)
Flashcards were one of the biggest reasons I made it through nursing school.
They’re perfect for:
Pharmacology
Lab values
Key definitions
I made a lot of my own, but having pre-made ones on hand was a huge time-saver—especially during busy weeks.
👉 If you’re short on time, using pre-made flashcards can make studying way more efficient.
💡 Final Thoughts
The biggest lesson? You don’t need to study harder—you need to study smarter. Also find yourself a study buddy! Us Nurses have to stick together!
Test different methods, figure out how you learn best, and stick with what works. Nursing school is tough, but with the right strategies, it’s absolutely manageable.
